Woman Tips:
What should I wear for my headshot session?
Solid Color Tops ONLY – Extensive patterns and decoration will grab attention away from your face. For professional headshots, the person viewing the headshot needs to be drawn into the face and not get distracted by outfit choices.
Well-Fitted & Tailored Clothes – Clothes that fit loosely will often make you look larger. Properly tailored tops will look flattering and professional. Avoid any tops that sit too slouchy.
Avoid Low Cut Tops – When photographing headshots, we photograph halfway into the chest area. If you decide to wear a low-cut top, it could take the attention away from the most important part of the headshot: your face.
Long Sleeves are Flattering – Short sleeves like to misbehave and can sit funky on the arms unless properly steamed or ironed. Short sleeve shows skin at the edge of a headshot, which may distract from your face.
Put Proper Undergarments with your Outfit – Bra straps showing in your headshot is very unprofessional. Make sure the straps are properly tucked away and hidden.
Avoid Transparent Tops – When looking through your clothes, make sure to try the tops on. That shouldn't be your top selection if you can see your undergarments through the shirt. If you decide to stick with a see-through top, make sure to bring a blazer or your favorite top for layering.
Vibrant Colors Stand Out – Depending on your profession, wearing vibrant colors will make your headshot stand out.
Darker Tops Can be Timeless – If you decide to stick with darker colors, besides black, navy is very flattering in photos.
Avoid Tops that Blend with Hair Color – Darker clothes blend too much with dark hair. If you have pale skin, avoid tops that blend with your skin unless you plan to layer. Otherwise, it looks too washed out.
Jewelry is Distracting – Jewelry draws the attention away from the face. We do not recommend to wear any type of jewelry for your headshot. Keep it clean, simple, and timeless.
Makeup and Hair: DO NOT get your hair and makeup done! This is a headshot shoot. You need to look like you normally do when a client meets you. No lotions on your face it will look shiny.
Men Tips:
What to Wear for Professional Headshots?
We’ll review each outfit together and decide which works best for you.
No matter what you choose, the most important thing is that your clothes fit well. There's not much we can do if your clothing doesn’t fit properly.
Solid Colors – Whether it's a shirt, polo, or jacket, stick to solid colors. Avoid stripes or small patterns, as they can cause a visual effect called Moiré. While it’s not necessary to understand this phenomenon fully, it’s essential to avoid it by choosing solid-colored clothing for your session.
Well-Fitted Shirts – If you don't regularly wear casual or formal shirts, try them on 2-3 days before your session. Bodies change over time, and it's crucial that your shirt fits well, especially around the neck. Consider visiting a store like Nordstrom to have your measurements checked and to find the perfect shirt size.
Avoid Undershirts – While undershirts are great for everyday use, we advise against them for headshots. They can often be visible under or through your shirt, creating unwanted lines on your chest and shoulders. For headshots, it’s best to skip the undershirt.
Haircut Timing – Avoid getting a haircut the day before your session. We recommend scheduling your haircut about a week in advance. This allows your hair to grow in slightly and look more natural without sharp cut lines
Shaved Hair – If you shave daily, continue your routine on the day of your session. If you shave every few days or weeks, allow 1-2 days for regrowth before the session.
Hair Washing – If you wash your hair daily, continue as usual. We recommend not going more than 1-2 days without washing your hair before your session.
Facial Hair
If you shave every day, feel free to skip this section. For those who grow a beard or shave less frequently, here are our top facial hair tips:
Bring Shaving Supplies – If you shave every few days or weeks and want to capture both looks, bring your shaving kit to the session. We can take photos with your beard first and then do a clean-shaven look afterward.
Trim Nose and Ear Hair – Pay attention to stubborn nose and ear hair. We recommend trimming these before your session. While we can retouch minor issues, it's best to handle them in advance.
Razor Burn – Use shaving creams and aftershaves that suit your skin. If you experience razor burn, don't worry too much—our professional retouching can help minimize its appearance.
Limit Sun Exposure – A few days before your session, try to minimize time spent in the sun. Fresh sunburn or redness won't look good in your headshots.
Get Enough Rest – You want to look rested, confident, and energized in your headshot. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before to ensure you look your best.
